I seem to have found the formula for a good ship
My German battlecruiser design for 1911 really is good, if you don't mind all the guns forward (6-12in/50). I actually was able to give the ship 31 knots instead of the planned 30 knots. The armor is light, but what I had planned. The armor deck is 5in, so that helps the ship be well protected, along with the 2in A/T bulkhead. The deck is flush with a good freeboard. That always helps a ship.
My 1909 German scout design
My Ger/CS/1909 design was really a large destroyer, along the lines of what the Italians were doing. The ship had a good freeboard, three stacks, and 4-5in guns with 2-21in TT. I was able to make it work in Springsharp by reducing the speed to 31 knots and bloating the displacement considerably above 2400 tons. The ship was unarmored. It is only an good seaboat, when I reduced the speed (and machinery weight), which is somewhat disappointing.

The Ger/BB/1909A design is another good one
The Ger/BB/1909A design actually outperformed what I had calculated back in the the early 1970's. I was able to have about the same displacement and still have a 14in armor basis, with 25 knot speed. The armament is 9-12in guns in triple turrets: two forward and one aft. The secondary armament is too light, but what I had though adequate at the time: 8-6in QF. Too boot, it is a good seaboat. My Ger/BB/1907 design really worked well
Aside from having to inflate the displacement, I received a glowing report from Springsharp about my Ger/BB/1907 design. The concept was for a well-armored ship with 8-12in guns and 24 knots speed. I had hoped for a normal displacement of 25,847 tons, but that was too low for Springsharp. The ship has a tripod foremast and two funnels. What I was able to do was:

My system for using Springsharp
Given that Springsharp is the most accessible and useful warship general design tool that I have seen (including my own, until I improve it, except for propulsion calculations), then we need to understand how to use it to get the desired results. I start by entering my initial set of specifications and generate a report. I generally do not look at the report, initially. Instead, I look at the Performance page. That will generally either like what you have (an unlikely occurance) or complain about something, usually hull strength. There are a number of things you will need to do. First, assure yourself that you have entered all the data needed, including freeboard, rounds per gun in the main armament, armor (if there is any), and the engine parameters, including boiler and engine. If you have deficient hull strength, the two main things you will have to do are to start reducing speed and increasing displacement. I recommend doing those incrementally, and not together, until you are at least viable. Decreasing speed has the greatest effect, due to machinery weight being a big issue. I usually end up with the ship underperforming for the displacement. I usually start reducing the block coefficient slider, until I can click into the situation where the Performance page declares the design to be balanced. If the seakeeping capability is deficient, you may be forced to increase freeboard and displacement, until you can resolve the issue. You may be able to affect the issue through reducing beam, which seems counterintuitive to me. You can also play with adjusting the stability-seakeeping slider. You may possibly be able to get some benefit from this. I have had not had much luck with it.
German destroyer design: Ger/DD/1905
My German destroyer design that I intended to build in numbers came out larger and slower than I wanted. What I wanted was an 870 ton, 32-knot vessel. Instead, to work, I had to drastically reduce the speed and increase the displacement.

I was only able to make what was intended to be a fast German minelayer work by reducing the speed to 32 knots. I guess that wasn't bad for 1913, but I had wanted 35 knots. The ship was to carry 3-6in guns and 250 mines. I allowed weights for mines, although I did not have good mine weight information, in a quick search.

Something to look for if your design "doesn't work"
If you design is not working in Springsharp, you may have neglected to fill in some critical piece. That is especially true if your design is relatively conservative. I just tried the larger German 1915 destroyer with 6-23.4in torpedo tubes, and had a "hard time". I thought it should be able to make 35 knots, but I would have to grow the displacement too much for that to be feasible. I had to settle for 34 knots. This is intended to be a "super destroyer", but it is not very "super".

One of my very fast British battlecruiser design studies
I am starting to understand how to get designs to "work" in Springsharp. I was able to get my 38 knot British battlecruiser of circa 1914 to get the "Design well balanced for a battleship or cruiser" performance designation. This is a "light battlecruiser" with 4-13.5in guns and I added 12-5.5in QF, as I had not showed a secondary armament in my sketch from "way back". If you are ready to greatly increase displacement, you can get most things to "work", even a ship as extreme as this. The report complains about seakeeping ability, however. That is something that is harder to achieve. This is the Springsharp report:

Another design study: Ger/CB/1915b1
By somewhat inflating my early 1970's design study for a 1915 German battlecruiser, I was able to achieve something good. The original intent was for a normal displacement of 37,500 tons. I can only guess at the protection, but I seem to have less than my original study. I had to settle for 32 knots rather than 36 knots, as well. My drawing is of a ship with three stacks and a tripod foremast with a large top, and a platform for a director. The mainmast is also a tripod.

The "Super Lion"
I just took another try at the "Super Lion" battlecruiser described in The World Crisis, Vol.1. This is rather speculative, but I think it captures Admiral Fisher's intent. The size is much greater than he would have liked (36,420 tons normal). Nonetheless, I am pleased with the result.

Another design study: Ger/DL/1915
I drew the profile for the Ger/DL/1915, and fell in love with it. The design is a classic DL type. The size is small by later standards, but is not unusual for the Great War. The main compromises were that I had to reduce the speed from 35 knots to 34 knots, and increase the normal displacement. The "Performance" says: "Design well balanced for a light fast combatant". The report complains about the seakeeping ability, however. My drawing actually looks German, which was unusual for me. This is the Springsharp report:

One of my many design studies (one of the more extreme) was for a 900ft long battlecruiser with 9-16.5in guns and a 40 knot speed. The speed seems to be not practical (that should be obvious), but I was able to get 34 knots with Springsharp. The planned load displacement was 40,000 tons, but I had to grow the design to work. I am really finding "Springsharp" to be interesting and useful
Springsharp has inherited the Springstyle approach, but Springsharp is good enough and easy enough to use that I find that I can live with it, even though I would not choose to do it the way they do. What I do differently in my warship design program is that I don't freeze the displacement and start subtracting weight from the hull structure as features are added. Instead, I let the displacement increase as features are added, and show the results with respect to displacement, draft, speed, and stability.

My design study for a British "1921" battlecruiser
I guess I should be happy that my British 1921 battlecruiser design study turned out as well as it did. The idea was to have a 48,000 ton ships with a speed of 30 knots, with 9-16in guns, a 14in belt and turrets, and strong deck armor. I was able to go to a 5in deck, so that was good. I had to grow the ship to do everything I wanted, but it wasn't excessive, unlike some times. Springsharp complains that the ship is not good enough for its size.

I just tried my Ger/CB/1906 design
I should have known that my design for a very fast battlecruiser that was moderately well-armed and lightly armored would have to change. The original concept was for a ship 800ft x 85ft x 25.6ft with a 25,000 ton displacement and a speed of 33 knots. I was fortunate to salvage a 30 knot speed by going very large. If you don't mind too large a ship, it makes for a good ship:

I had to scale back my expections for the Ger/CB/1905
I designed a light battlecruiser for the Germans in 1905 (the Ger/CB/1905). I had to settle for increasing the displacement above the planned 19,000 tons and reduced the speed from the planned 31 knots. This is what we are left with. It actually didn't turn out so badly, although I really wanted a higher speed, considering the sacrifice of guns and armor.

What we need now is a program for building 3D ship models
If you can design your own ships, the next thing we need is a program so that we can conveniently build 3D ship models, working at an abstraction level above the 3D modeling level. We don't want to have to bother with the details of 3D modeling, but would like to enter specs, and perhaps drag and drop components. There would need to be a way to specify new components, and perhaps doing a little "lofting", and that would be it. I would guess that this would not be a trivial effort. The only good thing about it is that the components would be limited. It is not like we are trying to build a general-purpose 3D modeling tool, useful for all things.

Cliff's destroyer design, which he intended to mass-produce, works pretty well in Springsharp, except for being a bad seaboat. I'm not sure what to do, without some pretty drastic action. I redid my Ger/CS/1905 design
Given what I learned about Springsharp, I redid my design for the Ger/CS/1905 scout cruiser. By reducing the speed way down to 30 knots, I was able to use my original dimensions and give them the 2in Belt over the machinery spaces. I had thought that I would have to accept 29 knots, but 30 knots is not so bad, given the date of the design. Admittedly, I wanted to have too light a machinery for 1905, although I don't think that what I want is out of line. This is the Springsharp report:

The GB/DL/1906 design
I must admit to being disappointed at what Springsharp had to say about my friend Cliff's fast destroyer leader from 1906. To get a good rating, I had to reduce the speed from 35 knots to 31 knots. Even then, Springsharp was complaining about the compartmentation being cramped. This is sort of an odd ship, in the the guns are 4-88mm. Cliff's idea was that if the 88mm gun was good in land warfare, it should be as good in naval warfare. Hence, the GB/DL/1906 had 88's. This is the report for the ship:

To get the GB/CB/1905 up to the originally intended speed, the design had to be greatly inflated
I decided to see what it would take to get the GB/CB/1905 battlecruiser design up to at least 31 knots. The goal was to get the coveted "Design well balanced for a battleship or cruiser" rating. More Springsharp
I highly recommend Springsharp, despite my frequent frustrations with the program. My relationship with Springsharp is similar to me and Mozilla Firefox, in that I have a love-hate relationship with them. My main problem with Springsharp is how it responds to my attempts to improve hull strength, stability, and seakeeping capabilities. I am, through trial-and-error, starting to understand what to do:
- Decrease speed
- Increase the block coefficient and displacement
- If all else fails, increase dimensions
- If the "Performance" complains about the ship "underperforming", decrease the block coefficient and displacement. You will then probably have to decrease speed, to compensate.

The GB/BB/1906 fast battleship design
My friend Cliff designed a British fast battleship that had good armor, speed, and a light armament. I called the design GB/BB/1906, as that was the year of the estimates in which it was included for the first time. A later version had 12in/50 guns. I was able to run the design through Springsharp, and was able to reach an acceptable design. The only thing I didn't like was that I had to inflate the size too much, to 28,165 tons. At least the standard displacement is the right figure: 25,194 tons. This is the report:

I really recommend Springsharp to those who want to design their own ships
While I would do somethings differently (and do, in my own warship design program), I highly recommend Springsharp to anyone who wants to design their own warships. I don't really have any interest, right now, in designing ironclads, but you could with Springsharp. My own program is geared up for 1903 to 1945 ships (primarily 1903 to 1927). I have not attempted to get very far into ironclad design, at least to be able to actually look at design parameters. I firmly believe that my power calculations would work for 1860 to 1903, and in fact, expanded the data tables to allow for ships with very large "displacement-length" ratios. Ironclads were generally very short for their displacement. The speed-length ratios involved were generally pretty low. I would probably have to add Schoenherr data lower down in the table, as I only entered what I needed for more modern ships. The key parameter is the Reynolds number. That is the index into the Schoenherr table. I use a table from Morton Gertler's book, A REANALYSIS OF THE ORIGINAL TEST DATA FOR THE TAYLOR STANDARD SERIES. The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers has republished the book. I bought a used copy in 2001, as Frank Fox had highly recommended the book to me. I use residual resistance data from graphs in David W. Taylor's The Speed andPower of Ships: A Manual of Marine Propulsion.

This is what I could make work as a scout cruiser
I was disappointed at what I could make work in Springsharp as a 1905 scout cruiser that was very destroyer-like. I had to drastically reduce the speed in order for the design to be viable. I would be interested to see if at a later date, it would work as intended. Note that this was based on the concept for Churchill's "Super Swift" from 1912, including the 2in side armor:

I'm having a lot of trouble with a scout cruiser design
I have a pretty straight forward scout cruiser design (destoyer-like), and Springsharp "doesn't like it". I don't know if the problem is that Springsharp has inherited Springstyle's lack of ability to deal with destroyers, or what the problem is. I have spent the last hour "wrestling" with Springsharp, and I cannot seem to arrive at a good combination of stability and seakeeping ability. It really should be no big deal: 370ft x 38ft x 13ft, and 2,480 tons, normal displacement. The armament is light: 5-4in/50 QF and 2-18in TT. The speed is high, being 36 knots, but that doesn't seem to really affect the issue.
Super-Inflated, Super-Fast Battlecruiser using Springsharp
I decided to see what it would take to drive a large, fast battlecruiser at 40 knots. One nice thing is that there is enough leeway to have a good armament and improved armor. To do it, it takes extreme dimension and displacement inflation:

I had to inflate the "Super Fast Battlecruiser" design to work with Springsharp
I am very interested in the Springsharp program, especially since I also have a program (although mine is not in the public domain, at this point). The Warship Project discussion forum
The Springsharp site has a discussion board about warship design. They also have an alternate world game project, which includes using new warship designs. I am interested in the subject, so I registered for the discussion forum. There are some members who are quite good a producing ship drawings using graphic editing. There is definitely a great deal of enthusiasm among participants, even those whose drawings are more diagrammatic than realistic. My one criticism might be that they would benefit from doing inboard profiles and internal layouts before doing the outboard profile. Frank Fox, noted all-around naval history and history of warship design guru (which is not widely known), has told me that I should not do an outboard profile without having done an inboard profile first. That applies to ships from the 16th and 17th Centuries as well as to ships in the period from 19o3-1945. I would highly recommend registering so that you can read the forum, if you are interested in designing your own warships. I would also recommend downloading the Springsharp program, as I am not at liberty to distribute my program.

I just did a small CL alternative design: 9-5.1in guns
I just tried out my alternative idea for the small CL armed with 5.1in (13cm) guns. I have thought that a three-turret design was more balanced, and reduced topweight. My main concern is that it might slow the rate of fire for what should be DP guns. The barbette diameter for the triple 5.1in gun turret is 20ft. The metacentric height at normal load pops up to 3.3ft. A side benefit was that the side armor could be increased to 2.5in, which is still so light that it is almost a waste of weight.
