A Vanguard-like ship, the GB/BB/1923

This is out of place in time, but the GB/BB/1923 was intended to be a Vanguard-like ship. I am just guessing about the designation, as there is not one included on the page. The page does have a complete weight breakdown and specifies 40 SHP/ton machinery. The specified power was 137,000 SHP, although this was expected to deliver 32 knots, it is only good for 30 knots. The armament is 8-15 BLR and 16-5in QF guns. Typical of this design series, there is no AA armament. The ship ended up with a greater displacement, necessary to achieve adequate strength. This was the original weight specification:

This large destroyer design has a quicker roll than I like, but perhaps that is normal for this class of ship. I was working from an inboard profile, only, with no specifications. The ship is flush-decked, with five guns with shields. There is one torpedo mount, aft of the second funnel. I toyed with the idea of using the 13cm QF gun as the main armament, rather than the rather light 4.7in QF gun. I reluctantly stayed with the 4.7in gun, however. This is the Springsharp report:

This design dates from late October 2004. The ship was intended to be a modern-looking E-class style light cruiser. The hull is flush-decked with a flared bow and transom stern. The armament is 9-6in QF guns in triple turrets and 6-4.7in QF guns in single mounts with shields. The armour basis is just 3in with a 2in deck. The Ger/CL/1921 Fleet Cruiser

I believe that I have previously misunderstood this design concept and had tried to reach the 37 knots originally desired, rather than to stay close to displacement and weights. The ship was intended for very lightweight machinery of 45 SHP/ton. The power planned was only for 56,200 SHP normal and overload of 67,400 SHP. The weight are useful, for comparison with the Springsharp design:

The Ger/CL/1917 fast light cruiser

The exact designation of this design is not written in the Red Book, but I am calling it the Ger/CL/1917. The ship was intended to be similar to the later Italian very fast light cruisers. The armament is 8-6in QF guns in turrets, 4-4in QF guns in mounts with shields, and 4-23.6in TT. Protection is limited to the turrets and barbettes. The displacement and draft are greater than was planned, to satisfy Springsharp. The original plan was for 5,000 tons Standard and 6,500 tons full load. The draft was intended to be 16.3ft at normal load. I have previously called this design the Ger/CL/1919. This is the photograph of one of the ships from the broadside:

The Ger/CB/1907 design

The Ger/CB/1905 design is for a ship with 8 12in guns on the center, with one turret forward, one amidships, facing forward, and two aft, with one superfiring. The secondary armament is in casemates, below the forecastle deck level. The armour basis is just 10in. This is the Springsharp report:

An alternative design for the GB/CB/1905 battlecruiser

This is greatly superior to what my friend Cliff decided to actually use in his building program. This design is closer to what Frank Fox and David K. Brown had advocated. The armament is 6-12in BLR and 9-6in QF guns, two more than the GB/CB/1905 had. The belt is 6in, instead of 4in, and I suppose that the better ship is made possible by 30 SHP/ton machinery. I underestimated the displacement necessary for the Ger/BB/1916 CDV

I have this really anachronistic drawing of a German coast defense battleship with 4-18in BLR and 16-4in QF guns. The armour basis is just 10in, with a 6in deck. The original concept is for 10in + 2in decks. Springsharp calculates that the weight would be more than 14,000 tons for a such a protection scheme, not the 10,039 tons that I had envisioned. I was able to keep the machinery weight down to around what was specified (2,170 tons). This is the Springsharp report:

The super short Ger/BB/1915 works pretty well

I have this inboard profile of what is probably the Ger/BB/1915 very short design study from the early 1970's. There is a minimal specification for the ship, and I have extrapolated the needed details, as well as taking advantage of the available slop in the design to add capability. The basic concept is for a 60,000 ton ship with 9-18in BLR and 24-5in QF guns, all in turrets. The ship has a tower foremast and a tripod mainmast, with large directors with long rangefinders. The main problem is the ridiculously deep draft, which would have been prohibitive, in practice. This is the Springsharp report:

A Ger/BB/1916 Large design from the Red Book

"Way back", I was still interested in very large (100,000 ton plus) battleships. I did a sketch design for a 105,000 ton Standard displacement ship with 9-19.75in (50cm) and 16-6in QF guns. The design was pretty good in that I forecast 280,000 SHP to reach 31 knots. The dimensions were 1,085ft x 140ft x 39ft (66ft hull depth). I took that and did a Springsharp design. The result is really good. The displacement is somewhat low at 103,391 tons Standard. The power to reach 31 knots is 297,122 SHP. Frank Fox says that the shaft loading is limited to 70,000 SHP, but Springsharp must be using a figure of about 75,000 SHP as the limit, as Springsharp does not complain about using four shafts with almost 300,000 SHP. An odd battleship design: GB/BB/1910

I am not sure of the exact date when my friend Cliff had thought he would start production of the design, but I have dubbed it the GB/BB/1910. In the event, Cliff went with a different design than this, but the GB/BB/1910 was very compatible with what he had designed, previously. This ship has a very pre-Dreadnought look, with two turrets, only, one at each end. They just happen to be triple 12in/50 guns, though. The secondary armament is a very weak 8-6in QF guns in two-tiered casemates, in the forward and after superstructures. The boats would have been stored between the after funnel and the mainmast. The Ger/CB/1915 design

The Ger/CB/1915 design dates from work I did in about 1973, judging by the drawing. This was intended to be a Hood sort of ship, except with 9-16.5in guns in triple turrets. The secondary armament is a rather light 10-6in QF guns. The armour basis is 12in. I tried to obtain the power, machinery weight, and protection weight in the original specification. For 200,000 SHP, I was only able to reach 31.5 knots, not 33 knots. Partly, this is due to the greater displacement and draft, over what was originally specified. The original concept had a 45,000 ton Standard displacement, while this design is 48,358 tons Standard. I also had to increase the draft from 30.3ft to 32ft to obtain adequate strength. The GB/DD/1905 design from the Red Book

The original pencil drawing and specification for the GB/DD/1905 design was for an 800 ton ship with 2-20pdr (88mm) QF guns and a rather anachronistic 2-21in torpedo tubes. The speed was 32 knots. There were three funnels with the first being raised and more narrow. The fuel allowed was 250 tons. This is the resulting Springsharp report:

The original GB/DL/1905 concept

My friend Cliff's original concept for the GB/DL/1905 design depended in large part on having a modest SHP to reach 35 knots. For whatever reason, Springsharp is requiring a much higher SHP to reach that speed. To a degree, the need to increase freeboard and draft to achieve adequate seakeeping and strength could be a factor, but that is largely contingent on the Springsharp requirements. This ship is odd, in for the 20pdr guns (88mm) and the 21in torpedoes. The ship has three funnels, with the first being thinner and raised. Two guns are in superfiring positions, with a small structure on the forecastle on which the superfiring gun and the pilot house are positioned. This is the Springsharp report:

The Ger/BB/1915 60,000 tons from a weight perspective

I had tried to go with the weight specifications given on the next page in the Red Book for the Ger/BB/1915 60,000 tons design, but the armour was too much for the ship and I had to decrease the protection weight, and lower the freeboard to stay at about 60,000 tons standard. The armament is 9-18in BLR and 16-6in QF guns. This ship was designed for the wargame campaign where there were aircraft and submarines were not used. The Ger/CB/1905 design from the Red Book

I had designed the Ger/CB/1915 light battlecruiser to be a lower-cost alternative to my friend Cliff's GB/CB/1905 design. I had done a fresh drawing and specificatino on 18 July 1973. I also played around with how to stretch the design. One feature of the specification is that I underestimated the power required to reach 31 knots. The only saving grace is that the design concept had enough slop so that enough power could be added not only to reach 31 knots, but 32 knots and to have an 18 knot cruising speed for 7,800nm miles on top of that! In the wargame campaign, I unimaginatively named the ship Blücher. My original specification had the following weights:

The best attempt ever at the Super Fast Battlecruiser design

The next page in the Red Book is the pencil drawing of the inboard profile and specifications for the Super Fast Battlecruiser, dated 18 July 1973. This is the ship with a standard displacement of 32,000 tons and with an armament of 4-17in BLR and 16-4in QF guns. The speed goals were outrageous: 52 knots. This shot at the design attempts to be as faithful as possible to the weights, and still achieve a high speed. I am not sure why this Springsharp design is as good as it is, but by keeping the displacement low (to the specified 32,000 tons), and using the specified protection weight, I was able to obtain 39 knots with a cruising speed of 18 knots for 7,500nm. The armour basis is 4in with a 2in deck. The torpedo bulkhead is 1in. This is the Springsharp report:

The GB/DT/1914 torpedo boat

My friend Cliff had conceived of the GB/DT/1914 as a torpedo boat, primarily, and it was flush-decked and looked anachronistic, with a single, trunked funnel. The 4in gun is mounted on the forecastle. The speed was rather modest, at 31.8 knots, which makes the Springsharp design easily to make work. The specified fuel was 250 tons, although my design is somewhat less. This is the Springsharp report:

Large, fast ships

I continue to be enamoured of large fast ships with large guns. They have the characteristic of being able to outrun anything which could harm them and to catch anything smaller than that, whatever their trial speed was. In any sort of a seaway, destroyers and small cruisers are slowed. The trial speed is pretty much limited to smooth water for these ships.

David K. Brown and Frank Fox have both told me that they believe that the large, fast battlecruiser should have at least an 8-gun armament, so that it can fire effectively at long range. My friend Cliff's GB/CB/1905 design only has 4-12in guns, so it fails the test. Both David Brown and Frank Fox also think that the design needs 6in side armour, not 3in or 4in.

Super Lion

The next page in the Red Book is a specification for a Super Lion-like British battle cruiser. The specification is not very good in the sense that too much was expected from too small of a ship. I adjusted the design so that the weights closely match what was originally specified for machinery and protection. The armament is 10-15in BLR and 16-5in QF guns. The belt is 6in and the maximum turret and barbette protection is 9in. I had hoped for 32 knots but 30 knots is what can be done for the power and size. This is the Springsharp report:

The next pages in the Red Book are armouring schemes for the Ger/BB/1905

The very next page in the Red Book was the Ger/BB/1905 armouring scheme that I have previously published. The very next page after that is an alternate armouring scheme with less side armour and more deck armour (plus a quirky anti-torpedo protection scheme). In this scheme, there is no upper deck side armour and the main belt is 10in for 8ft and then tapers to 6in over another 8ft. For weight purposes, I reduced this to 12ft of 10in armour. The torpedo protection has two 1in bulkheads, apaced 6ft apart, with thinner bulkheads, not armoured, in between. The slopes were intended to be 3in and there are two armoured decks, the upper being 4in and the lower 2in. To accommodate this, the displacement is 22,700 tons normal. The next page in the Red Book specifies an armouring scheme for the Ger/CBL/1915 Mod.A design

I have taken the Ger/CBL/1915 design and applied the armouring scheme specified by a cross sectional drawing in the Red Book.

The features are a 4in outwardly angled main belt, 12ft high, a 8-ft high upper belt, 3in thick, and a 2in upper deck. There is no torpedo bulkhead, although the hull is subdivided and has the "sandwich" layer at each side. I was able to retain the 40-knot speed, although the displacement grew. Still, the standard displacement is 19,793 tons, which is not too great. The draft grew to 25.5ft, as well. This was all to accommodate a greater armour protection, although the length was shortened. Presumably increasing the deck armour to 2in from 1in was the main culprit. This is the Springsharp report:

The Ger/BB/1915 CDV Design from the Red Book

The Ger/BB/1915 CDV drawing in the Red Book looks something like a pocket battleship. Of course, the displacement and general capabilities are much greater, although the speed is a modest 23 knots. On the page with the drawing, there are no specifications, but the drawing is to scale (1in = 100ft). The armament is clearly intended to be something like 6-16.5in BLR in triple turrets and 20-5in QF guns in twin turrets. The length is 580ft and the draft is 30ft. The freeboard at the bow is 25ft and the hull is flush-decked with a straight, vertical bow. I had initially gone with 1937 engines, but Springsharp allowed to light of machinery for the power, so I "derated" the machinery to 1923. This is the Springsharp report:

What I am calling the Ger/BB/1910 design has 15-11in guns

The design that I have labelled Ger/BB/1910 has an armament of 15-1in guns in triple turrets. The ship looks very German for the pre-WWI period, although the armament layout is rather Italian-like. The ship looks something like the Koenig. I think that it was inspired by the Italian battlehips with 13-12in guns. The design actually works quite well, if you can live with 11in guns on a ship built this late. This is a case of sacrificing gunpower to achieve better protection. This is the Springsharp report:

The Ger/CB/1905 (Flush-Decked) did not work as well

I followed the Ger/CB/1905 specification and drawing as closely as I could, but the ship cannot achieve the desired speed of 27 knots. 67,543 SHP is required to just reach 26 knots, much less 27 knots. This is based on a drawing that is similar in concept to the Ger/BB/1905 flush-decked battleship. I had to adjust the draft and displacement to achieve adequate strength. The seakeeping is not as good, due to the power required to reach even 26 knots. The hull weight is about 500 tons more than I had hoped for in my original design. This is the Springsharp report:
