A Springsharp 3.0b1 Beta version of the Ger/CBL/1915 Mod.A design
The Ger/CBL/1915 Mod.A design is a "Cruiser Killer". I had designed the ship in the early 1970's to see what might be done for extreme speed. The armament is rather like an 1890's fast Elswick cruiser, except that the main armament is in a turret, rather than some other mount. The ship is designed to run up on lesser ships, hammer them with a quick, close range shot or two from the 12in guns and sink or disable them. This is a photo of one of the ships:

A very fast Ger/CB/1911 design
From the beginning, the Ger/CB/1911 design was intended to have very lightweight machinery (the beginning being 1971). This was designed to sacrifice armament and protection for speed. Springsharp 3.0b1 forced me to use geared turbines to get rid of an error message, probably due to the date of the machinery. The date was set late so that the machinery would be lightweight. This was my last attempt at a photograph of a Ger/CB/1911 ship:

So, as built, what speed could the Renown and Repulse make?
I did an experiment to see what the Renown and Repulse, as built, might have been able to make in 1916. My guess is about 33 knots, if the machinery was pressed hard. The report in the 1919 Jane's Fighting Ships that they had reached 41 knots is a joke. Even if they were extremely light, I find that sort of speed to be very doubtful. I might try reducing ammunition supply and fuel to see if they might have been able to faster, without compromising strength too severely. This is the Springsharp report:

"Wish List" for Springsharp
Top on my "Wish List" for Springsharp is better power calculations for small, fast ships like destroyers. Next on my list is to have some other mechanism for setting power per machinery weight other than setting the machinery date. The British super destroyer Swift, designed in 1905 was able to achieve a peak power output of 60 SHP/ton of machinery. The British Arethusa class light cruisers designed in 1912 had a power output of 40 SHP/ton of machinery. The power output of the Swift probably can't be reproduced in Springsharp, even with a 1950 machinery date. I would still like the ability to arbitrarily set power for machinery weight, perhaps with an indication of just how radical the figure that I choose is.

Another attempt at the Ger/CS/1905 scout cruiser
I just used Springsharp 3.0b1 Beta to do a design for the Ger/CS/1905 scout cruiser, which was my attempt at a "Super Swift", except for 1905 for the Germans. My version that I intended to produce in numbers was to have 2in armour over the machinery spaces. I could only manage 34 knots, rather than the hoped for 36 knots. The problem was seakeeping, primarily. This is my drawing of one of the ships:

The GB/CS/1915 works extremely well in Springsharp 3.0b1 Beta

A Super Lion battlecruiser design with Springsharp 3.0b1 Beta
I tried a Super Lion design with Springsharp 3.0b1 Beta, and was pleased with the result. A purist might complain that I am going too large for the date, but I think that a 30-knot ship with 10-15in guns needs to be large. I went with Admiral Fisher's "limited armour", as well. For those not familiar with the Super Lion, Winston Churchill discusses Admiral Fisher's concept in Vol.I of The World Crisis.

I am having Springsharp 3.0b1 Beta troubles
I am seeing the sort of problems that exist with Springsharp 3.0b1 Beta. They seem to center around the "Speed, Range, and Power" page and what shows up in the "Performance" and "Report" pages. I am trying to do a BB-27 Michigan design (photo from this New York Shipbuilding site), and odd things are happening. The "Composite Strength" is bouncing around with what I would expect to be only marginally related changes. The Michigan is interesting to me because it was very small, but had 8-12in guns, with superfiring turrets. It is the earliest example of a more modern layout. The Dreadnought was still using a pre-Dreadnought layout, in may ways (oddly enough). This is the Springsharp report:

The GB/CL/1941, a 6in gun cruiser
The GB/CL/1941 design worked reasonably well in Springsharp, except that 35 knots was not readily achievable, at least with the specified power. The ship has a 3in armour basis and a 2in deck. The armament is 12-6in/45 QF, 8-4in AA, and 30-40mm AA guns. This is the original pencil drawing:

A nice version of the GB/CB/1941 design
I tried a new version of the GB/CB/1941 design in Springsharp 3.0b1 Beta. The design turned out very well. This is a 31 knot ship that has 9-16in/45, 20-4.5in DP, and 42-40mm AA guns. The armour basis is 12in with a 5in deck. The speed is 31 knots. The ship is somewhat like an updated Hood, with 16in guns. I probably should have some miscellaneous weights, but I am not sure how large they should be, for the aircraft capability. I would welcome some suggestions. This is the photo of the pencil drawing:

A new Ideal Battleship design
I have changed my mind about one aspect of Colonel Cuniberti's Ideal Battleship design. If built, they would have had turbine machinery, not reciprocating. They also would have been started about the date that construction of the Dreadnought commenced. The one other aspect that I was not able to reproduce is that to achieve adequate characteristics, the displacement has to be much larger than 17,000 tons. The dimensions were retained: 521-1/2ft x 82ft x 27-1/2ft. The armament is the original 12-12in, but 40 caliber, not 45 caliber. The secondary armament is the 12-12pdr QF guns in casemates, with 6-47mm 3pdr pom-poms. There is the amazing 12in complete belt and 24 knot speed. I have assumed that the machinery would have to have been very light, and therefore, a possible weakness, rather than the usual heavy and robust machinery usually specified. Speaking of fast ships: the Capitani Romani class
Frank Fox has told me that he now believes that the Italians treated the high-speed run of the Capitani Romani class light cruisers as a trial, and may have lightened the ships, so that the extreme speed (43 knots?) was possible and achieved.

I apologize for beating on the large, fast ship topic so hard, but what I have today explores the outer limits of what is possible. I actually suspect that even faster is possible. This is a 42-knot design, with the lightest machinery, that has an 8in armour basis and 6-14in/50, 16-5.5in QF, 6-4.7in AA, and 32-40mm AA guns. The freeboard is quite high and the displacement was reduced. I was pleasantly surprised that the protection and machinery size are as good as they are. This is the Springsharp 3.0b1 Beta report:

Near the limits of what is possible: a 40-knot GB/CB/1905
This is probably not a desirable thing to do, but I had wondered what was possible with the GB/CB/1905 design. It may be that by increasing the freeboard, I might have gotten another knot or two from the ship, but settled for 40 knots. I implemented various weight-saving measures and went to six shafts. Six shafts on a ship with an 85ft beam is not very practical, to say the least. The power plant must use the lightest machinery possible, and really, this is an anachronistic design, as it seems necessary to use geared turbines before their time, to satisfy Springsharp 3.0b1 Beta. Yesterday's design is probably more like what is practically achievable with acceptable protection (if you don't mind a 4in belt, at least). This is an older photo of a ship of the class:

An extreme sports GB/CB/1905 battlecruiser
Since I can run Springsharp 3.0b1 Beta here at lunch, I thought that I would see just how much speed I could achieve, through really radical measures. The answer is 38.5 knots is what is achievable, doing what I just did. The design is very extreme, as I use very lightweight machinery. To optimize power and strength, I lowered the displacement considerably, so that there is no excess weight going into the hull. As you may recall, this is the best photo:

The drawing of the anachronistic Repulse
This is the quick drawing I made of the anachronistic Repulse. I find that having a sketch results in a better design, as things such as the belt length have a more reasonable basis.
