My original concept for a German scout for 1905

My original concept for a German scout for 1905 was rather like the later British Botha class, except faster. I was able to come close to the original concept in Springsharp. The draft had to be increased from 12ft to 13ft and the normal displacement had to be increased to 2,250 tons from 2,200 tons. The machinery necessarily had to be the highest power output possible, which was 56.29 SHP/ton of machinery. This approaches the 60SHP/ton of the Swift, which was a contemporary. The Swift suffered, however, from being considerably overweight. This is the Springsharp report:

New calculations for the Ger/CS/1909 scout

With machinery that is 48.7 SHP/ton, the Ger/CS/1909 scout cruiser works quite well. The one thing that I did was to increase the draft from 12ft to 13ft. That sufficed to obtain an adequate seakeeping ability, along with hull strenght. My original hope was to have machinery that would generate 45 SHP/ton of machinery. More power was required to reach 35 knots than I had expected, so higher output machinery was required. When I question it, I just remember the Swift with 60 SHP/ton of machinery weight a few years earlier. This is the Springsharp report:

Since I had the cross section for the Ger/CBL/1915 design, I thought that it would be worth recalculating. One thing I learned immediately is that there is no armor protection on the anti-torpedo protection system. To save weight, there is only compartmentation. This is the new Springsharp report:

A design study for a smaller Ger/BB/1915 CDV

I have a pencil inboard profile for a smaller coast defense battleship labelled Ger/BB/1915 CDV (Coast Defense Vessel). The ship is moderately well protected, has a speed of 20 knots, and carries 4-16.5in guns. The ship has an anachronistic look, with a tower formast and trunked funnel. The Springsharp design worked quite well:

A German battleship design study with 15-11in guns

I had thought that a natural alternative for a German battleship would have 15-11in guns in triple turrets. I drew a pencil sketch and did some calculations. These were the origanally planned weights:
  • Auxiliary machinery: 1,100 tons
  • Hull: 6,960 tons
  • Machinery: 833 tons
  • Protection: 15,211 tons
  • Armament: 1,656 tons
  • Miscellaneous: 2,240 tons
The ship was to be 580ft x 100ft x 33.3ft with a normal displacement of 28,000 tons. The speed would be only 20 knots. I massaged the Springsharp design until I achieved a balanced design. The biggest deviation was a 23-knot speed. The Springsharp report had less protection, as well:

A new attempt a the Ger/CB/1905 flush decked battlecruiser

This is a new version of the Ger/CB/1905 battlecruiser design. The design has a flush deck and two funnels. The armament has superfiring turrets for the 8-12in/45 guns. I was not able to reach 27.7 knots without further reductions in machinery weight and increase in power. These are originally planned weights:

  • Machinery=2,280 tons
  • Auxiliary machinery=720 tons
  • Armament=1,216 tons
  • Protection=7,284 tons
  • Miscellaneous=1,600 tons

I am investigating the possibility of being able to offer posters

It looks like I will be able to offer posters. The only question will be the cost. Sadly, they would not be four-color printing, but just digital printing, due to the cost. I would like to have a poster of my large painting of the Seydlitz after Jutland. I would like some posters of some of my photoart, although I may be the only one interested.

The flush-decked 1905 German battleship revisited

I just recalculated the German battleship design study Ger/BB/1905 with the flush deck. The dimensions were influenced by the real Westfalen class. The dimensions are 490ft x 90ft x 29ft. The armament is 8-12in/45 BLR and 12-6in/45 QF guns. The armor basis is 12in, although that is not consistently applied. The maximum speed was 22 knots. This is the new Springsharp report:

A German light cruiser design study, circa 1914

I am unsure of the exact year that this was intended to be laid down, but I have estimated that it was for 1914. I had originally hoped that it would be only 4,240 tons displacement. At this point, I am unsure if that was Standard or normal. The speed was set at 32 knots, maximum. To achieve adequate strength, the machinery had to be light and the normal displacement had to be greater. In this case, it was 4,950 tons with a draft of 18ft instead of 16ft. The armament was 4-6in QF guns with 8-21in TT in twin mountings. The armor basis was 2in. This is the Springsharp report:

A German 1912 battleship design study

I believe this to be a German battleship design study, not British. My friend Cliff ultimately decided to build battleships with 9-15in guns in 1912, and I decided to build battlecruisers instead of battleships. Cliff had gone so far ahead of what I had been thinking of doing, that I had radically reshape my plans. This design study was what I had originally been considering building. The battleship would have had 9-12in/50 and 8-6in/50 QF guns. The armour basis was 13in. I have assumed that it would be a wide slab, and "all-or-nothing". The speed was 25 knots. My latest attempt at the Ger/CB/1906 design

I tried the Ger/CB/1906 design as originally specified, and found that I had to increase the displacement and draft to obtain sufficient strength. The ship was intended to be 800ft x 85ft x 25.6ft with a standard displacement of 25,000 tons (I believe it was standard and not normal). My new version had a 27.5ft draft with a 25,245 ton standard displacement. Normal displacement was 26,750 tons. The armament is 8-12in/45 BLR with 12-4in QF guns in shields. The armor basis is only 4in, as this was a very radical concept intended to reach a fairly high speed with 8-12in guns. This is the new Springsharp report:

A revision to what I just did: Ger/CB/1905

I found on a succeeding page, a midships cross section of the Ger/CB/1905, and I realized that what I just published was different than this. The lower belt is 4in and the upper belt is just 3in. The deck armor should be 3in and the anti-torpedo protection should be just 1in. This also shows the Ger/CB/1905 as not having a flat bottom. The floor angles up about two feet from the centerline to the anti-torpedo bulkhead position. This is the revised Springsharp report:

A variant of the Ger/CB/1915 design ("Blücher")

I have an early sketch of the Ger/CB/1905 light battlecruiser design that has a better secondary battery than the other versions. The ship has the same 4-12in/45 BLR but has 10-4in QF guns in casemates and then 4-4in QF guns in shields mounted on the superstructure, giving 14-4in QF guns. The ship otherwise is consistent with the rather sparse specification. The original cost was estimated at £1,710,000. This is the Springsharp report:

A new version of the Ger/BB/1905 design

I have a new version of the Ger/BB/1905 design that is based on a good set of specifications. The only thing that is abnormal is setting the machinery date to 1909 to obtain a higher power output for a given machinery weight. This is a ship that was intended to be 580ft x 90ft x 26.6ft with a displacement of 22,000 tons. The armement is 8-12in/45 BLR and 12-4in QF guns. The armor basis is 10 inches. A good version of the Ger/BB/1909A battleship design

With what I now know about Springsharp, the Ger/BB/1909A design came out quite well. The drawing and specifications were probably from 1973, as the drawing is done in that style. The ship comes out quite fast, as the size is such that the armor is not that significant. Admittedly, the machinery is fairly light for the power. The armament is 9-12in/50 BLR and 8-6in/50 QF. The speed is 27 knots. The displacement is 33,500 tons. This is the Springsharp report:

The Ger/CB/1915 design study

There is a drawing and armor specifications for a battlecruiser in the series with my other designs for ships with two, superimposed triple turrets forward. The idea was always to shorten the citidel length, although Springsharp may not support this very much. The armor basis for this design is 12in and the speed is 33 knots. The ship has a tower foremast and three funnels. The hull steps down at about 74%. This is the Springsharp report:

A faster version of the BBX with 18in guns

I have a pencil inboard profile of my friend Cliff's design for the BBX (GB/BB/1915) super battleship. This version had a higher speed (28.3 knots with 179,000 SHP). The Springsharp power calculation came out very close to this (178,317 SHP), which is pretty amazing, considering that the early 1970's calculation was based on SHP/ton of displacement and Speed-Length ratios measured from not very good data about real ships. A better version of the Ger/BB/1915 alternative design

I had drawn a picture and supplied specifications for a version of the Ger/BB/1915 battleship design with a more normal draft. The displacement had to rise about the 60,000 tons that was proposed. The issue was structural strength. To carry an 18in armor basis with 9-18in guns created the need for stronger hull and more displacement. This is the SpringSharp report:

German Armoured Cruiser: Ger/CA/1906

The date is just guesswork, but the ship otherwise matches that period, except for triple turrets. This is a ship of 550ft x 80ft x 26ft with 6-12in/45 BLR and 8-6in QF guns. The 6in guns are in barbettes. The 12in guns are in two triple turrets, one forward and one aft. The armour basis is 6in with a 3in deck. The thick deck armour caused the displacement to be greater than planned: 18,100 tons normal rather than 16,860 tons. The speed is 25 knots, so it is almost a battlecruiser.
