Speaking of fast ships: the Capitani Romani class
Frank Fox has told me that he now believes that the Italians treated the high-speed run of the Capitani Romani class light cruisers as a trial, and may have lightened the ships, so that the extreme speed (43 knots?) was possible and achieved.
