Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
19,976 lbs / 9,061 Kg = 23.1 x 12.0 " / 305 mm shells or 2.5 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1.22
Metacentric height 6.2 ft / 1.9 m
Roll period: 15.2 seconds
Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 96 %
- Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0.52
Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 1.35
Hull form characteristics:
Hull has rise forward of midbreak,
a ram bow and a cruiser stern
Block coefficient (normal/deep): 0.653 / 0.660
Length to Beam Ratio: 6.50 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 24.19 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 52 %
Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 71
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): -3.00 degrees
Stern overhang: -3.00 ft / -0.91 m
Freeboard (% = length of deck as a percentage of waterline length):
Fore end, Aft end
- Forecastle: 30.00 %, 24.00 ft / 7.32 m, 24.00 ft / 7.32 m
- Forward deck: 33.00 %, 24.00 ft / 7.32 m, 24.00 ft / 7.32 m

- Average freeboard: 21.04 ft / 6.41 m
Ship tends to be wet forward
Ship space, strength and comments:
Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 155.0 %
- Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 146.2 %
Waterplane Area: 40,444 Square feet or 3,757 Square metres
Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 92 %
Structure weight / hull surface area: 147 lbs/sq ft or 715 Kg/sq metre
Hull strength (Relative):
- Cross-sectional: 0.96
- Longitudinal: 1.45
- Overall: 1.00
Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is cramped
Room for accommodation and workspaces is excellent
Ship has slow, easy roll, a good, steady gun platform
Good seaboat, rides out heavy weather easily

An attempt at William Hovgaard's "Battleship-Cruiser" in 1903
I wanted to see what could be done with using 1903 technology to implement William Hovgaard's Battleship-Cruiser concept. He wanted a fast battleship that might sacrifice a few guns to still have heavy armour and a high speed. I was able to have 8-12in/45, 12-6in QF guns, an 10in belt, and 24 knots speed. To do that with reciprocating engines and coal-fired boilers demands a very large ship. My Springsharp design is 25,911 tons standard. This is the Springsharp report:
