"Up to my old tricks": a 38 knot ship with 9-14in guns
I could not resist doing my usual thing ("My old tricks"). I tried a 38 knot battlecruiser with 9-14in guns. The belt is 7in and the deck is 4in. The secondary and AA armaments are what I have been using. They are unchanged from the other ships in this series. I still like having a big ship that will outrun smaller ships in a seaway. There is essentially nothing at sea that this ship cannot catch. Some smaller ships may be faster in a flat calm, for a short time, but in normal conditions, they will not be able to run away. This ship can outrun anything, but aircraft, that could damage it. This is the Springsharp report:

The 35-knot battlecruiser with 9-15in guns
The next step seemed to be to increase the armament of the 35-knot battlecruiser (GB/CB/1921) to 9-15in guns. I decreased the belt to 6in and reduced the turret faces, barbettes, and conning tower to 8in. The deck is still the thick 4in. The Standard displacement has ballooned to 37,664 tons. Still, the ship is much more potent, and the roll period is still a quite long 16.9 seconds. If anything, the roll period was increased further. This is the Springsharp report:

With a few modifications, the "cruiser killer" can make 35 knots
I decided to see if I could modify the last design to reach 35 knots. The WL length was increased to 814ft and the beam to 88ft. The new draft is 27 ft. The armament and armour are essentially unchanged. I like the fact that the roll period is a nice and long 16.4 seconds. The belt is still 7in and the deck is still 4in. That provides adequate protection for what this ship would need to worry about. I would hope that is someone sees a problem, they would let me know so that I can correct whatever it might be. The 12in-gunned cruiser killer: GB/CB/1921
The next natural step seemed to be to have a 12in-gunned version of the cruiser killer. This version has a 7in belt and 4in deck. The turret faces and barbettes are 9in, as is the conning tower. The armament is unchanged from the 10in-gunned version, except for the main armament caliber. This is the Springsharp report:

A heavy cruiser with 10in guns
I am pretty happy with this heavy cruiser with 9-10in BLR, 16-4.7in QF, 6-4.7in AA, and 24-2pdr AA guns. The speed is still 33 knots and the armour basis is 5in with a 3in deck. The range is 7,500nm at 18 knots. I am not sure how well this ship would fare against 8in-gunned cruisers, but I would hope that it could outgun and outrange them. This is the Springsharp report:

My attempt at a "cruiser killer" along the lines of what Frank Fox had suggested
Frank Fox had told me that he preferred something more along the lines of a 9.2in-gunned heavy cruiser for a "cruiser killer", rather than something similar to a battleship or battlecruiser. On 17 February 2002, I tried such a design. The ship has 8-9.2 BLR and 8-4.7in QF guns. The speed is 32 knots. The armour basis is 6in with a 2in deck. The ship can cruise for 6,500 nm at 18 knots. My GB/CA/1921 "1921-style" armoured cruiser
I have a drawing and specification dated 27 April 2002 that I did while I was working towards the end of my first contract in Minnesota. By this date, I had seen the sort of design work that Frank Fox was doing, and that influenced what I was doing with this ship. I even have an inboard profile that I drew, mimicking what I had seen Frank Fox do. My ship was different from anything that Frank has been doing, as he is interested in American WWII designs, while I tend towards British ships from 1905 to 1927, although I do ships up to 1945. To make this work in Springsharp, I had to increase the displacement by about 3,300 tons and the freeboard by one foot. This is the Springsharp report:

My It/DD/1934 design: 36 knots for a price
I was able to achieve 36 knots with the It/DD/1934 design by having a deep draft, high freeboard and a considerable displacement. The ship has 4-4.7in QF guns in twin mounts and has 6-21in TT. The It/DD/1931 design
Springsharp seems to have some pretty extreme limitations for small ships. To even reach 35 knots, rather than the 38 knots of the real Italian destroyers, I had to have an unrealistically high freeboard, too deep a draft, and too great a displacement. The only improvement of these ships over the It/DD/1927 design is a knot of speed. This is the Springsharp report:

My It/DD/1927 design
This is my It/DD/1927 design. To make this work in Springsharp, the speed is less that I would have liked. The best I could do with Springsharp is 34 knots. The fuel load is less than the real ships from this period. For this power, somewhat over 40,000 SHP the ships should be able to reach 36 knots. The armament is 4-4.7in QF and 4-37mm AA guns, with 6-21in TT. The draft is too deep at 12 ft, but this helps make the design viable in Springsharp. This is the Springsharp report:

My first attempt at an It/DL/1927 design
I struggled to allow this design to reach even 36 knots, not the 37 or 38 knots that I would have liked. I would be open to suggestions about how to achieve that, while still having acceptable strength and seakeeping. This is intended to be a super-destroyer with 5-5.1in QF guns and the fastest speed possible. With the current version of Springsharp, much of the problem with small, fast ships is that Springsharp overestimates how much power is required to reach a given speed. This is the Springsharp report:

My later model small, fast battleship: the It/BB/1933
The It/BB/1933 design has the usual 10-12.6in guns in the main armament, but it also has 4-triple 5.3in DP turrets and 16-4in AA guns in twin turrets. The LAA armament is now 32-37mm AA guns in twin mounts. The speed is still 28 knots, but the range is now 5,400nm at 15 knots. The side armour is still 12in, but the deck armour is now 5in and the torpedo bulkhead is 4in. This is the Springsharp report:

The It/BB/1927 design: obviously inspired by the Cavour
As you can tell, the It/BB/1927 design is inspired by the Cavour. My design relies upon very lightweight machinery to be viable. I use the same 10-12.6in guns. The It/CA/1937 heavy cruiser
My design for the It/CA/1937 is a better protected ship, in that the deck armour is 3in, in stead of 2in. The belt is slightly longer, as well. The heavy AA armament is 8-4.7in AA guns and the light AA armament is 28-37mm AA guns in twin mounts. The main armament is unchanged at 8-8in guns and the torpedo armament is still 8-21in TT in quad mounts on the deck. The speed is 34 knots and the range is slightly greater at 4,800nm at 15 knots. My first attempt at an Italian heavy cruiser: It/CA/1929
This design is somewhat similar to the real thing. I could not make a flush-decked It/CA/1929 work, so I went with a raised forecastle. It certainly only is possible with extremely lightweight machinery (39.6 SHP/ton). This ship has 8-8in guns, 3in armour and a 35 knot speed. I am pleased that we could achieve this much. This is the Springsharp report:

My 1933 Italian light cruiser design
My 1933 Italian light cruiser design is better-protected than the real ships. Mine has a 2in deck, for one thing, and a 1in torpedo bulkhead. The main belt is 4in thick, although it is just 12ft high, just protecting the waterline. I increased the speed to 36 knots, so the ship is huge, at 11,306 tons Standard. The armament is unchanged from my 1931 design. This is the Springsharp report:
It/CL/1933, Italy Light Cruiser laid down 1933 (Engine 1945)
Displacement:
10,986 t light; 11,306 t standard; 11,900 t normal; 12,375 t full load
Dimensions: Length overall / water x beam x draught
624.05 ft / 618.00 ft x 59.00 ft x 21.00 ft (normal load)
