A 37 knot British light cruiser

I thought that the next step would be to create a British light cruiser that was like the Japanese Mogami class ships. Obviously, such a ship must be larger than 10,000 tons standard. The amazing thing is the displacement is not that extreme, due to the use of very lightweight machinery. This is the Springsharp report for the GB/CL/1932:

A 35 knot British light cruiser for 1921

I was hoping that a British light cruiser for 1921 that could make 35 knots might not have to be so large, but this one is over 10,000 tons standard. The armament is 9-6in/50 QF guns, 6-4.7in AA guns, and 12-21in TT. The armour belt is 3in and the deck is 2in. I suppose that having the underwater protection like this is what makes the design have to be large:

My concept for a fast battlecruiser with 10-15in guns

The GB/CB/1921 design study is my current concept for what a fast, lightly armoured battlecruiser should be. This is a flush-decked ship with a flared bow and a wide transom stern. The main armament is in two quadruple turrets and one superfiring twin turret. The armour is all-or-nothing style, but only a 5in inclined belt. I thought that the ship needed a 33 knot speed. This is the Springsharp report:

A radical GB/CB/1915 design

This design for a GB/CB/1915 battlecruiser seems inspired by the Super Lion concept. The ship has 10-15in/45 guns (as originally specified, not the real 15in/42 guns) and 16-5in/50 QF guns in shields, mounted on the deck. The armour is light, the machinery is a light as is possible. The speed is 32 knots. The original specification had a beam of 90ft, but a viable design is not possible in Springsharp with such a narrow beam. This is the Springsharp report:

My Ger/BB/1916 concept with 20in guns

When I was working in Minneapolis, in early 2002, I had this concept for a German battleship that I called the Ger/BB/1916, that had 9-20in guns. This version has a fast battleship speed, at least by American standards in 1940. My sketch design had twin funnels and a tower foremast topped by a gun director with a long rangefinder. This is my Springsharp report:

A new version of the "Ger/CB/1905 Flush-Decked" design

I have a new version of my Ger/CB/1905 Flush-Decked Design. This depends on having lightweight machinery to work, as well as oil fuel. Still, the concept seems to work fairly well. The concept dates from the early 1970's and included a pencil sketch. My photo dates from April 2005. This is the Springsharp report:

You can easily specify ships which are not a viable design

My original specification for a GB/CB/1915 battlecruiser would not work as specified. The beam was too narrow for the armament. I had wanted 10-15in/45 (I have used 15in/42 instead) and 16-5in QF guns. The dimensions were to be 800ft x 90ft x 26.5ft with 136,600 SHP at maximum overload power. The turrets and barbettes were 9in and the belt was 6in. I had hoped for some high speed beyond what is reasonable. I had to increase the beam to 104ft and lower the freeboard to have a design with acceptable recoil behavior. This is the Springsharp report:

A more faithful version of the Ger/CB/1915 design study

I was looking at the three pages with information about the Ger/CB/1915 design study, and I thought that I needed to try a more faithful representation of the original design. This ended up as a 35 knot battlecruiser with 6-16.5in/45 and 12-6in/50 QF guns. The belt is 8in, inclined at 17 degrees, and is very short. The deck armour is 4in. The torpedo bulkhead is a thin 1.35in, although it is not explicitly listed. I decided that must be right, as there is another place where that thickness is used for splinter protection. The design obviously depends non lightweight machinery:

The Ger/BB/1915 design

The Ger/BB/1915 design is one where I greatly underestimated the speed that was possible with the specified power. This is a 750ft long ship of about 60,000 tons. The armament is 9-18 and 24-5in guns. The power was specified as 120,000 SHP, but the 26 knots is what Springsharp says is the top speed for that power. I had thought it would only make 20 knots. This is a much better ship than I had thought possible:

A very large American battleship: the US/BB/1942 Large

I have long toyed with the idea of extremely large battleships. This one is intended to be American and to be laid down in 1942. I kept the draft down to 36ft. If you can believe it, this is a battleship with 51,700 tons of protection! The speed is 30 knots and the armament is 9-21in/45 BLR, 24-5.1in/55 DP, and 56-40mm AA guns. The belt is 18in, inclined by 17 degrees and the deck and torpedo protection are both 8in. The underwater protection is very great, although the protection against gunfire is lighter. If Springsharp would allow it, I would give such a ship 9-24in guns. This is the Springsharp report:

The Ger/BB/1916 large battleship

I have this specification and sketch of a very large German battleship with 10-21in and 24-5in guns. The speed is specified as 20 knots with 85,000 SHP. I had specified 5,000 tons of fuel oil. I tried to get the power and fuel of the original specification. I probably have too much protection, as the original had 36,884 tons of protection. The ship is short and wide at 1:6 beam to length. The Springsharp report can make more than 20 knots on the power, even with a greater displacement that is needed for adequate hull strength. This is the Springsharp report:

How about a very fast F/CA/1917 design study?

I have a rather cool looking sketch of a version of the F/CA/1917 with 6-11in guns. I thought it might work to have a higher speed, like 37 knots. I tried it out and have this Springsharp report:

A Ger/BB/1916 design study

This design study, that I am calling the Ger/BB/1916, is for a 28.5 knot ship with 12-16.5in and 16-6in QF guns. The original specification hoped for a 60,000 ton ship, but that is too small. Looking the weights, I gave my Springsharp design better protection than I had originally planned and that accounts for the larger size. I had envisioned that the weights would be like this:
21,020 tons hull
 6,700 tons machinery
 3,810 tons armament
23,670 tons protection
 4,800 tons miscellaneous

This is the Springsharp report:

The Ger/BB/1916 design study

I have a specification for a design study of a German battleship, circa 1916, with 9-16.5in guns. The guns are 130 tons and fire a 2,480 lbs shot at 2,800 ft/sec. The ship is 755ft x 110ft x 32ft. The ship has a 120,000 SHP power plant. According to Springsharp, that will drive the ship at 27 knots, which is at the lower end of a fast battleship speed. I went with 16in armour basis, as there seemed to be excess capacity in the design. This is the weight specification:
18,000 tons hull
 4,000 tons Armament
 2,670 tons Machinery
16,730 tons Protection
 3,600 tons Miscellaneous

The F/CA/1919 design with 11in guns

Perhaps for realism, the F/CA/1919 design should have 10.8in guns, but it has 11in guns, instead. Back in the early 1970's, having a version of the fast belted cruiser with 11in guns seemed like the next logical step. The secondary armament grew to 8-6in guns. The speed is now 35 knots, so it is a very potent design:

Battleship Texas pictures

I want to make some battleship Texas t-shirts, so I have these two images that I want to use. They probably have too much detail, but I want to try them, nonetheless.

An "expanded" version of a "Super Lion" fast battleship

I have a photograph of my "Super Lion" design hanging on the wall, and I was thinking that a version with 10-16in guns would be interesting. A length of 855ft is sort of a classic dimension, so I decided that would work for this ship. This is very much a early WWI-style ship, with the older look, rather than the 1921 look. The displacement is quite large, but the power needed is not excessive. I much prefer the William Hovgaard style "battleship-cruiser" over the lightly protected Fisher battlecruiser. This is the Springsharp report:

The longer version of the F/CA/1917

The longer version of the F/CA/1917 is a much better design. The draft is still too shallow, even when I increased it to 22ft in this version. The hull form is too full for what the ship is. The original concept had a 4in deck and with the 729ft length, that was easily achieved, along with a 34 knot maximum speed. The armament is still 8-9.4in and 8-4in QF guns, with 6-21in TT. The belt is a thick 8in, although it is very narrow at 8ft tall. The design is really a modern version of the 1880's belted cruiser. This is the Springsharp report:

The short version of the F/CA/1917 fast belted cruiser

The short version of the F/CA/1917 fast belted cruiser is something of a failure. I had greatly overestimated what might be possible when I created the concept. I was going to build six of the ships for my building program, but I had ignored hull strength and seakeeping considerations. The ship had 8-9.4in guns in two quadruple turrets mounted forward and then had 8-4in QF guns aft. the narrow belt was 8in. The speed is much lower and the deck armour is much lighter than I had planned. I would expect that a 729ft version would work better. This is the Springsharp report:

The Ger/BB/1916 "Large" design

I did not give the very large battleship a designation, but I am calling it the Ger/BB/1916 Large. This is a nominally 105,000 ton ship with 9-19.75in guns and a speed of 31 knots. I was impressed at how good my power estimate was, consideringthat it was very much a "back of the envelope" estimate, based on smaller, example ships. This is my original specification:
Displacement: 105,000 tons Dimensions: 1085ft x 140ft x 66ft (depth)
9-19.75in guns (238 tons) 280,000 SHP = 31k knots
Weights:
24,070 tons Hull
 7,000 tons Machinery (40 SHP/ton)
56,382 tons Protection
 4,000 tons Auxiliary Machinery
 8,400 tons Miscellaneous
