The September 9, 2001 version of the Ger/DD/1915 design

In my binging on drawing ships on September 9, 2001, I drew the Ger/DD/1915 design. It is a compact German destroyer with a more modern look, with two funnels and no well forward of the bridge. The bridge and funnels are streamlined. The armament is 2-4in QF guns at the ends and 4-21in TT in twin mounts aft. There are 30 mines on rails at the stern. The speed is my standard 32 knots. The design works well in Springsharp, except that I had to increase the freeboard by two feet. The dimensions are 260ft x 26ft x 10ft. The design depends on very lightweight machinery. This is the Springsharp report:
Ger/DD/1915, Germany Destroyer laid down 1915 (Engine 1945)

Displacement:
 769 t light; 796 t standard; 900 t normal; 983 t full load

Dimensions: Length overall / water x beam x draught
 262.40 ft / 260.00 ft x 26.00 ft x 10.00 ft (normal load)
 79.98 m / 79.25 m x 7.92 m x 3.05 m

Armament:
      2 - 4.00" / 102 mm guns in single mounts, 32.00lbs / 14.51kg shells, 1915 Model
Quick firing guns in deck mounts with hoists
   on centreline ends, evenly spread
Weight of broadside 64 lbs / 29 kg
Shells per gun, main battery: 250
 4 - 21.0" / 533.4 mm above water torpedoes

Machinery:
 Oil fired boilers, steam turbines,
 Geared drive, 2 shafts, 28,334 shp / 21,137 Kw = 32.00 kts
 Range 3,750nm at 15.00 kts
Bunker at max displacement = 187 tons

Complement:
 81 - 106

Cost:
 £0.143 million / $0.574 million

Distribution of weights at normal displacement:
 Armament: 8 tons, 0.9 %
 Machinery: 464 tons, 51.6 %
 Hull, fittings & equipment: 267 tons, 29.6 %
 Fuel, ammunition & stores: 131 tons, 14.6 %
 Miscellaneous weights: 30 tons, 3.3 %

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
   241 lbs / 109 Kg = 7.5 x 4.0 " / 102 mm shells or 0.2 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1.27
 Metacentric height 1.0 ft / 0.3 m
 Roll period: 10.8 seconds
 Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 51 %
   - Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0.25
 Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 1.02

Hull form characteristics:
Hull has rise forward of midbreak
 Block coefficient: 0.466
 Length to Beam Ratio: 10.00 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 16.12 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 74 %
 Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 50
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): 1.00 degrees
 Stern overhang: 2.00 ft / 0.61 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
    - Stem: 23.00 ft / 7.01 m
    - Forecastle (20 %): 20.00 ft / 6.10 m
    - Mid (30 %): 20.00 ft / 6.10 m (12.00 ft / 3.66 m aft of break)
    - Quarterdeck (15 %): 12.00 ft / 3.66 m
    - Stern: 12.00 ft / 3.66 m
    - Average freeboard: 14.64 ft / 4.46 m

Ship space, strength and comments:
 Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 177.4 %
  - Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 80.5 %
Waterplane Area: 4,370 Square feet or 406 Square metres
 Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 59 %
Structure weight / hull surface area: 24 lbs/sq ft or 118 Kg/sq metre
 Hull strength (Relative):
  - Cross-sectional: 0.42
  - Longitudinal: 4.36
  - Overall: 0.53
Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is cramped
Room for accommodation and workspaces is cramped
