My most successful Ger/DM/1913 design

My Ger/DM/1913 design would have had one ship built to it, named the Meteor, after the real German minelayer. The specifications are very demanding for the current state of the art Springsharp:

An "alternate" Ger/CL/1914 design

I have long admired the Russian light cruisers built right before and during the Great War. They seemed to have some German influence. I thought that I would try designing a German ship along those lines, although persisting in using English units for torpedos and guns. I wanted to keep using coal-fired boilers, as that would have been what would have been actually used. This is my Springsharp design:

A conservative Ger/DL/1912 design (but not real)

This is a conservative Ger/DL/1912 design that is not intended to be "real German", but more like our alternate history German designs. The main thing is that is more realistic is using coal-fired boilers. The speed is 33 knots, which is not too extreme. The guns are heavier than you might expect, at 4-5.1in QF. The tubes are not a German size. They are 6-21in TT in three twin mounts. This sort of ship is not able to take much damage, which is the downside of all of these designs. The famous Russian destroyer Novik

The destroyer Novik was the first of the new generation ships built for the Russian navy prior to the Great War. This is a photograph of indeterminate date (at least for me).

An even older turret ship: the GB/BB/1868

I thought that the next step could be an even older turret ship, a contemporary to the Monarch and Captain: the GB/BB/1868. There is the minor detail that I didn't try to deal with masts and rigging. Unless such a feature were added to Springsharp, to be able to handle rigged ships, I wouldn't even attempt such a thing. This ship has 4-12 guns and 6-4in guns. The armour basis is 12in and the deck is 3in. The belt is complete, although the ends are thinner. The speed is low: just 12 knots. This is the Springsharp report:

How about an 1876 battleship?

Just for fun, I thought that I would try an 1876 battleship: the GB/BB/1876. This is intended to be a sort of breastwork monitor type, similar to the Devastation type. My freeboard may actually be higher than than the Devastation. My ship has 4-12.5in and 6-6in guns. The armour basis is 14 inches with unarmoured ends. They have 4in deck protection, only. My main battery is in Coles turrets. The speed is 14 knots, which I would think would be reasonable for the date. This is the Springsharp report:

A generic 1905 Tribal class destroyer

I am shocked. I was able to make a generic 1905 British Tribal class destroyer work in Springsharp 3.0b2 Beta. This is a class of ship that eventually carried 2-4in QF guns and 2-18in TT. They were originally intended to have a speed of 33 knots and carry 90 tons of oil fuel. I have done pretty well, I think, except that my ship is very light, and depends on the lightest weight machinery:

We should be able to do better: GB/DD/1921 small and somewhat fast

I wanted to see what could be done with a smaller British destroyer for 1921. I was able to achieve a 35 knot speed with 4-4.7in QF, 6-2pdr AA guns, and 6-21in TT. We should be able to achieve a higher speed than this. This is the Springsharp report:

A very fast destroyer for 1921

I thought that the next design should be a very fast destroyer to be laid down in 1921. With the present Springsharp program, the ship has to quite long. Still, I have not done any as well as 36.5 knots for a destroyer before. The British had wanted to develop both 5in and 5.1in guns, but never got around do finalizing either caliber. This design has 4-5in guns, as this ship needs a substantial armament. This is the Springsharp report:

A very fast British super-destroyer: GB/DL/1921

I wanted to have a very fast British super-destroyer to work with the very fast heavy and light cruisers. I suspect that this ship is much larger than it should be, due to limitations with the current Springsharp 3.0b2 Beta. My ship has 6-5.1in QF guns in turrets, with one forward and two aft. There are also 2-4in AA and 8-2pdr AA guns, with 6-21in TT. The top speed is 37 knots and I made the ship large and long enough so that the design works well. This is the Springsharp report:

The Ger/CL1914 light cruiser design

I had decided to build some more conventional light cruisers for the Germans in our war game. These look pretty "German", with three funnels and a short forecastle. Three 5in guns are mounted on the centerline, with one at the rear in superfiring position. Two are on the sides at the rear of the forecastle and four more are on the sides. One pair is between the second and third funnels and the last pair is just forward of the rear superstructure. The ships were designed to carry forty mines on rails. A very fast British heavy cruiser

I intended that this be a companion design for the very fast light cruiser that I designed. This is a 37 knot heavy cruiser with 9-8in/55 BLR, 6-4.7in AA, and 24-2pdr AA guns. The belt is 4in, the deck is 2in, and there is a 1in torpedo bulkhead. That makes for a very well-protected ship. I suspect that given how easy this design was, that an even faster ship is possible. Another Ger/CB/1912 version

Late in the Blue Book, there is another specification for the Ger/CB/1912 design. This version works extremely well in Springsharp 3.0b2 Beta. There are some questions that are unanswered, so I took artistic license to make up the missing pieces. This is what one of the ships looks like:

It takes a big ship: the GB/BB/1905 Battleship-Cruiser

This is a design study for a 1905 British battleship-cruiser (or fast battleship). I had decided that I wanted an armament with 10-12in/45 and 12-6in QF guns with an armour basis of 11in. That, with a 25 knot speed means a larger ship. Still, the displacement is not too out of hand. As you would hope, this is a smaller ship than a Queen Elizabeth class ship from 1912. I am going with the anachronistic all oil fuel in 1905, so that is open for debate. Otherwise, the design is pretty straight forward, although it depends on lightweight machinery. An "Unlimited" Italian light cruiser

I decided to see what could be done with a fast Italian light cruiser, using the Springsharp we have now. I increased the size and length to see how fast the ship could be. Without too much trouble, I was able to achieve 39 knots, with an armament of 9-5.3in/45 DP, 8-37mm AA guns, and 8-21in TT in two mounts. The size necessarily ballooned. I did a second version with a wide transom stern, and that made a big difference. This is the Springsharp report:

An attempt at a faster Italian light cruiser: It/CL/1939 Fast

We will have trouble doing too much better than this with the current version of Springsharp 3.0b2 Beta. There may actually be two issues at work, not just the machinery weight. The other is the formula used to calculate power for a hull model to make a given speed. I have suspected that for smaller ships, what Springsharp is currently using requires too much power for a given speed. I base that on comparisons with real ships. We know, for example, that the Italian Capitani Romani class ships could make 41 knots on trials. I had to warp the design to get 35 knots:

Springsharp 3.0b2 Beta can't deal with the Italian Capitani Romani class

I was disappointed that the Italian Captani Romani class doesn't work in Springsharp 3.0b2. I would have to alter the design a great deal to have acceptable performance. I believe that the issue is machinery that is too heavy for the power. By radically reducing the speed and displacement, I was able to have adequate strength and seakeeping, but the speed is a ridiculous 32 knots. If someone has a magic formula to make the design work, I would be interested. I already increased the draft to help. This is a good data and picture page. This is the Springsharp report:
