Super Lion

The next page in the Red Book is a specification for a Super Lion-like British battle cruiser. The specification is not very good in the sense that too much was expected from too small of a ship. I adjusted the design so that the weights closely match what was originally specified for machinery and protection. The armament is 10-15in BLR and 16-5in QF guns. The belt is 6in and the maximum turret and barbette protection is 9in. I had hoped for 32 knots but 30 knots is what can be done for the power and size. This is the Springsharp report:

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
   40,905 lbs / 18,554 Kg = 24.2 x 15.0 " / 381 mm shells or 5.0 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1.04
 Metacentric height 4.6 ft / 1.4 m
 Roll period: 17.7 seconds
 Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 60 %
   - Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 1.34
 Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 1.20

Hull form characteristics:
Hull has rise forward of midbreak
 Block coefficient: 0.594
 Length to Beam Ratio: 8.89 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 28.28 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 49 %
 Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 50
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): -2.00 degrees
 Stern overhang: -2.00 ft / -0.61 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
    - Stem: 30.00 ft / 9.14 m
    - Forecastle (20 %): 27.00 ft / 8.23 m
    - Mid (67 %): 27.00 ft / 8.23 m (19.00 ft / 5.79 m aft of break)
    - Quarterdeck (15 %): 19.00 ft / 5.79 m
    - Stern: 19.00 ft / 5.79 m
    - Average freeboard: 24.60 ft / 7.50 m
Ship tends to be wet forward

Ship space, strength and comments:
 Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 112.1 %
  - Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 202.2 %
Waterplane Area: 52,372 Square feet or 4,865 Square metres
 Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 99 %
