Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
34,533 lbs / 15,664 Kg = 14.2 x 16.9 " / 430 mm shells or 5.0 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1.15
Metacentric height 6.1 ft / 1.9 m
Roll period: 16.9 seconds
Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 54 %
- Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0.89
Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 1.63
Hull form characteristics:
Hull has rise forward of midbreak, low quarterdeck
Block coefficient: 0.578
Length to Beam Ratio: 5.73 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 23.94 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 45 %
Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 33
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): -2.00 degrees
Stern overhang: 6.56 ft / 2.00 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
- Stem: 26.25 ft / 8.00 m
- Forecastle (20 %): 24.61 ft / 7.50 m
- Mid (72 %): 24.61 ft / 7.50 m (14.76 ft / 4.50 m aft of break)
- Quarterdeck (15 %): 14.76 ft / 4.50 m (16.40 ft / 5.00 m before break)
- Stern: 14.76 ft / 4.50 m
- Average freeboard: 22.09 ft / 6.73 m
Ship tends to be wet forward
Ship space, strength and comments:
Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 107.7 %
- Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 153.4 %
Waterplane Area: 39,730 Square feet or 3,691 Square metres

An upgunned Koenig class battleship
I thought that a Springsharp design for a 17in-gunned Koenig class battleship would be interesting. I was pleased that 8-17in guns was possible. I had expected to have to accept 6-17in guns. You can judge if what I have done was reasonable. The hull is bulged and new barbettes and gun turrets are required. This is the Springsharp report:
