The Ger/BB/1916 Design Study revisited

The Ger/BB/1916 design is rather short and tubby for the displacement that is required. I had to increase the armored citadel length to satisfy Springsharp. The normal displacement is not almost 100,000 tons (on only a 900ft length). I had overoptimistically (according to Springsharp) hoped for a 510 ft citadel length and an 80,000 toon standard displacement. Springsharp puts the standard displacement at 91,904 tons. The Springsharp normal displacement is 99,005 tons. Since I had budgeted 85,000 SHP for machinery, I was able to get 22 knots rather than the expected 20 knots. This is the Springsharp report:

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
   187,929 lbs / 85,243 Kg = 40.6 x 21.0 " / 533 mm shells or 36.7 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1.11
 Metacentric height 11.1 ft / 3.4 m
 Roll period: 18.9 seconds
 Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 83 %
   - Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0.86
 Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 1.66

Hull form characteristics:
 Hull has a flush deck
 Block coefficient: 0.709
 Length to Beam Ratio: 6.00 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 30.00 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 38 %
 Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 50
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): 3.00 degrees
 Stern overhang: 3.00 ft / 0.91 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
    - Stem: 40.00 ft / 12.19 m
    - Forecastle (20 %): 32.00 ft / 9.75 m
    - Mid (50 %): 32.00 ft / 9.75 m
    - Quarterdeck (15 %): 32.00 ft / 9.75 m
    - Stern: 32.00 ft / 9.75 m
    - Average freeboard: 32.64 ft / 9.95 m

Ship space, strength and comments:
 Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 64.0 %
  - Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 239.3 %
Waterplane Area: 109,075 Square feet or 10,133 Square metres
 Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 109 %
Structure weight / hull surface area: 288 lbs/sq ft or 1,404 Kg/sq metre
 Hull strength (Relative):
  - Cross-sectional: 0.95
  - Longitudinal: 1.61
  - Overall: 1.00

Room for accommodation and workspaces is excellent
Ship has slow, easy roll, a good, steady gun platform
Excellent seaboat, comfortable, can fire her guns in the heaviest weather
For comparison, this was my original weight budget:
  • Machinery=2,840 tons
  • Aux. Machinery=3,000 tons
  • Hull=24,000 tons
  • Armament=6,876 tons
  • Protection=36,884 tons
  • Miscellaneous=6,400 tons
