Back in the early 1970's, I had done a design study for very fast French armoured cruisers to be named:
- Dunkerque
- Strasbourg
- Jean Bart
- Richelieu
- Gascogne
- Clemenceau
I had designed a short version and then realized that for higher speed, the length needed to be expanded to 729ft from 676ft. The armament is 6-9.4in (25 ton) BLR and 8-4in QF guns. The above water torpedo armament is 6-21in TT. the armour belt is 8in, although it is just 8ft tall. This is the Springsharp report:

Fuel, ammunition & stores: 1,521 tons, 7.9 %
Miscellaneous weights: 0 tons, 0.0 %
Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
28,411 lbs / 12,887 Kg = 68.4 x 9.4 " / 239 mm shells or 3.4 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1.09
Metacentric height 3.8 ft / 1.2 m
Roll period: 16.1 seconds
Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 72 %
- Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0.54
Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 1.44
Hull form characteristics:
Hull has rise forward of midbreak
Block coefficient: 0.456
Length to Beam Ratio: 9.72 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 27.00 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 56 %
Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 50
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): 2.00 degrees
Stern overhang: -2.00 ft / -0.61 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
- Stem: 33.00 ft / 10.06 m
- Forecastle (20 %): 30.00 ft / 9.14 m
- Mid (75 %): 30.00 ft / 9.14 m (22.00 ft / 6.71 m aft of break)
- Quarterdeck (15 %): 22.00 ft / 6.71 m
- Stern: 22.00 ft / 6.71 m
- Average freeboard: 28.24 ft / 8.61 m
Ship space, strength and comments:
Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 120.2 %
- Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 217.6 %
Waterplane Area: 35,060 Square feet or 3,257 Square metres
Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 120 %
Structure weight / hull surface area: 136 lbs/sq ft or 663 Kg/sq metre
Hull strength (Relative):
- Cross-sectional: 0.92
- Longitudinal: 2.18
- Overall: 1.00
Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is cramped
Room for accommodation and workspaces is excellent
Ship has slow, easy roll, a good, steady gun platform
Good seaboat, rides out heavy weather easily
